John Prescott and Michael Howard were two of the big names to feature on the dissolution honours list.

Des Browne, former defence secretary, and Ian Paisley have also won peerages, together with John Hutton and John Reid, the former home secretary.

Sue Nye, the former aide to Gordon Brown who he criticised in his comments during ‘bigotgate’ featured on the list.

Quentin Davies, who defected from the Tories to join Labour when Gordon Brown entered No 10, is to be made a peer.

Sir Ian Blair, former head of the Metropolitan Police, was conferred a peerage for life. He will sit as a cross-bench peer in the Lords.

Guy Black, chief executive of the Telegraph group, is also on the list, as was Sir Kenneth McDonald, former director of public prosecutions.

There were some surprising omissions however. Joanna Lumley had been widely expected to appear, as had Ruth Kelly, former education secretary.
