Christmas strike threat hangs over BA

Festive holidaymakers could find their Christmas holidays disrupted if the threat of industrial action by British Airways cabin crew staff becomes reality.

A dispute over contract changes has led to the balloting for strike action, the result of which will be announced on December 14th.

Under industrial action rules a strike could take place from December 21st as a result.

Around 14,000 BA cabin crew face contractual changes which union Unite claims have been imposed without agreement. Crewing levels are to be reduced from November 16th.

Today’s meeting at Sandown racecourse followed an update from Unite on why negotiations with the airline had stalled.

In a separate bid to prevent the contractual changes taking place Unite will seek an injunction from the high court preventing them going through on Thursday.

BA is expected to post significant losses when it announces its annual results this week. It lost £401 million last year.
