The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPPC) has announced it will be investigating the alleged assault of a 22-year-old woman during the G20 protests.

It is only the fourth incident connected with the protests to be investigated by the commission despite having received 256 complaints relating to the G20.

Of those complaints, 121 were made about the use of police force during the protests by both witnesses and alleged victims.

There were 75 complaints about police tactics and a further 60 which were not eligible for investigation, including people who had seen television footage of the event and wanted to complain.

It was also noted the IPCC was working with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary on their review of the policing of the protests. The investigation is of particular poignancy given there are expected to once more be protests in the City of London tomorrow.
