Air travel into, from and around the UK is being severely disrupted by the heaviest snowfall in the south-east of England for 18 years.

Airport operator BAA has already warned of significant delays and cancellations at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted and Southampton.

Both runways are currently closed at Heathrow, a decision vindicated by the last plane cleared to land slipping on the runway.

More than 250 flights have been cancelled at Heathrow, where all British Airways flights are cancelled until 17:00 GMT.

BA said the only long-haul and short-haul flights not affected by the snow were to Edinburgh and Lisbon.

London City airport and Luton are also both currently closed, while Norwich and Leeds Bradford airports have reopened.

“Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight before departing for the airport,” a statement from BA said.

There is also no service on the Gatwick Express, stranding thousands of travellers at the airport after Transport for London cancelled all bus services.

“For more detailed positions at our airports, including airline contact numbers, please visit the relevant airport site,” BAA said.

“With bus and rail services affected and difficult road conditions across the country, please take extra care and time if you do intend travelling to any of our airports.”
