Surveys indicate employment problems

Two new polls have indicated a poor outlook for employment.

Workers are increasingly fearful for their job prospects, a poll by a banking group has found.

The Lloyds TSB poll suggests that UK employees now have the lowest confidence in their continued employability than at any time in the last half year.

The survey of 2,000 workers found that one in five thought their job was less secure than at the same time last year.

Meanwhile, job prospects in manufacturing have fallen to their lowest levels in two years, according to a survey from an industry federation.

All manufacturing sectors, except transport equipment, cut jobs in the three months to August, according to the third quarter report of the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF).

However, despite the figures, the poll of 1,000 companies found firms showing “resilience” and optimistic that results in the next quarter would improve thanks to modest growth in industry output over the last quarter.
