Poll places Kennedy as more trustworthy

Most voters think Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy is more trustworthy than Tony Blair or Michael Howard, a new poll reveals.

The YouGov poll for The Daily Telegraph found 46 per cent of voters said they thought he was not telling lies about higher taxes; only 22 per cent thought he was.

A total of 58 per cent of respondents concurred with the Tories that the premier was a “liar”.

Most voters thought Michael Howard was untruthworthy and half (51 per cent) were unconvinced he was being honest during the election campaign.

In terms of who would make the best premier, Mr Blair’s rating stood at 36 per cent, 12 points ahead of Mr Howard and 18 points ahead of Mr Kennedy respectively, albeit down two on the previous survey.

Labour led the poll in terms of economic competence, with a rating of 48 per cent, compared to 28 and 24 per cent for the Tories and Lib Dems.

A total of 57 per cent of interviewees said they believed most politicians lied to win elections.

Overall, Labour’s poll rating stood at 36 per cent, with the Tories four points behind on 32 per cent.

The Liberal Democrats were stuck on 24 per cent.

A quarter of respondents said they may change their minds between now and next Thursday.

YouGov forecasted the Tories would need a swing of 10.3 per cent to win an overall majority, with a 6.2 per cent swing to deprive Labour of an overall majority.

YouGov asked 2,070 voters online between April 26 and April 28.
