UK rescue workers leave Iran

Rescue workers from the UK and around the world were preparing to leave the scene of the Iranian earthquake yesterday.

Hopes of finding any more survivors have now all but disappeared.

As many as 50,000 people are thought to have been killed when the earthquake struck the city of Bam on Friday.

Aid agencies and national governments have all promised financial support and emergency equipment to help tackle the impending humanitarian crisis.

Yesterday, Oxfam dispatched £50,000 in essential equipment to the effected area.

For its part the UK government has pledged £700,000 in support.
