Arise Sir Menzies

The Liberal Democrats’ foreign affairs spokesman Menzies Campbell has been handed a knighthood in the New Year honours list.

The MP for North East Fife was awarded for his services to Parliament.

The 62-year old has been an MP since 1987 and has served on the Lib Dems’ front bench for a decade.

Sir Menzies said he had had a rollercoaster year, after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of cancer, in 2002.

Sir Menzies said: “This is an unexpectedly pleasant end to what has been a rollercoaster year for me and my family.

“I’m greatly honoured that it should be in recognition of my services to Parliament.”

Labour MP for Middlesbrough Stuart Bell and Conservative MP for Bournemouth West John Butterfill have also been knighted for services to Parliament.

Former defence secretary and soon to stand down NATO general secretary Lord Robertson of Port Ellen has been awarded a GCMG in the Diplomatic List.

Godric Smith, one of the Prime Minister’s official spokesman, received a CBE.

Mr Smith will leave the job once Lord Hutton publishes his inquiry into the tragic suicide of Dr David Kelly.
