GM moratorium under review

The Government is likely to back calls to end Europe’s five-year moratorium on genetically modified food (GM).

At a meeting in Brussels on Monday, European Union partners will consider an application from Swiss giant Syngenta for permission to sell GM sweetcorn in Europe.

Syngenta’s request to sell insecticide-added Bt11 is the first of 29 applications from GM companies due to be assessed over the next year or so.

The Food Standards Agency has said it has no fundamental objection to the request.

But according to The Independent on Sunday the corn has not been properly tested for safety.
