‘Working households will be furious’ at £2000 MP pay rise, say campaigners

Parliament’s pay watchdog has announced that MPs will receive a 2.7 per cent pay rise from April.

This lines up with the average pay rise of other public sector workers for the coming year.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), who decide pay rises independently of government and parliament, said MPs will by paid £2,212 more from 1 April 2022 to 2023, meaning their annual salary will rise from £81,932 to £84,144.

Responding to the news, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Working households will be furious to see MPs’ pay go up while they face crippling tax hikes.

“The current system of pegging politicians’ salaries to public sector pay only leads to rows over unpopular and unseemly rises.

“Elected officials should show restraint and only accept rises when economic conditions allow.”
