Taoiseach says UK must cooperate over fishing row with France

Taoiseach (prime minister) Micheal Martin has said the UK government must behave constructively to resolve its ongoing dispute over fishing licenses with France.

Addressing reporters at the COP6 UN climate summit in Glasgow today, Mr Martin said Ireland’s government is concerned that the UK is not approaching the dispute in a “constructive manner”.

“We believe the European Union and the UK government need to engage constructively on a whole range of issues, not least fisheries,” he told the Press Association.

“I believe there is discussion underway between the UK government and the French government and that they may be in a position to get that issue resolved.”

“We would like to see that resolved, independent of the protocol.”
