Rayner reaffirms Johnson will have to resign if he misled the House of Commons

In the midst of the ongoing political storm surrounding a potential Christmas party that may have been held in Downing Street last December, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party has this morning launched a savage personal attack on the Prime Minister.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain on ITV this morning, she has further reaffirmed that he will have to resign if it subsequently emerges he has misled the House of Commons. Yesterday the Prime Minister told the Commons that as he understood it, no rules were broken at the event in Downing Street.

Referring to his claims at the Dispatch Box, and to the potential that they may subsequently turn out to be inaccurate, Rayner said, “The rules are very clear that if you mislead Parliament then Ministers and the Prime Ministers are not above the rules.  The ministerial code says that he would have to resign”.

Attacking Boris Johnson personallly, Angela Rayner said, “I think we have a Prime Minister, who quite frankly I never felt was fit for office anyway, but he has proven over the last couple of months, that he isn’t”.

Continuing she said, “I think it just proves that Boris Johnson is a man who has never felt that the rules applied to him”.

Yesterday the Scottish Conservative leader, Douglas Ross, also suggested that Boris Johnson would need to resign if ever misled MPs adding that this would be ‘completely unacceptable’.
