PM backs calls for P&O boss to step down

A No 10 spokesperson has confirmed that Boris Johnson supports calls for the sacking of P&O ferries chief executive Peter Hebblethwaite.

When quizzed at today’s lobby briefing over whether the prime minister was on the same page as transport secretary Grant Shapps- who called for Hebblethwaite’s resignation earlier today- the spokesperson replied “Yes”.

Shapps urged Hebblethwaite to step down from his position following the impromptu sacking of 800 workers, slamming his select committee appearance this week as “brazen, breathtaking, and showed incredible arrogance”.

The company announced last Thursday that it would be firing 800 staff redundant and replacing them with cheaper overseas workers.

The firm said in a statement that it was not currently “a viable business,” and that it was operating on a £100m loss.
Chaotic scenes then unfolded as trade unions Nautilus and the RMT told members to not leave the ferries, while the firm instructed agency staff to board the ships.
