MPs to debate petition relating to safety at nightclubs

This evening MPs will debate e-petition 598986, relating to safety at nightclubs. Tonia Antoniazzi, a member of the Petitions Committee, has been asked by the Committee to open the debate. Rachel Maclean, Minister for Safeguarding, will respond on behalf of the Government.

The petition, which has more than 172,000 signatures as of 3 November, states: “I would like the UK Government to make it law that nightclubs must search guests on arrival to prevent harmful weapons and other items entering the establishment. This could be a pat down search or metal detector, but must involve measures being put in place to ensure the safety of the public.”

The Government is yet to respond to this petition.

This comes after months of growing concern over spiking incidents via injections and drinks in bars and clubs.
