Govt has ‘bungled and mismanaged’ challenges in NI says Labour

Speaking to Sky News’ “Trevor Phillips on Sunday” show, shadow Northern Ireland secretary Peter Kyle said: “measures to deal with the legacy issues of the violence in Northern Ireland” have been “bungled and mismanaged”.

He adds that the government’s approach has “destabilised” the political system.

“And then put into the middle of that, of course is a prime minister that goes to Northern Ireland makes an absolute solemn promise: there’ll be no border down the Irish Sea and they have no intention of honouring that promise and in fact, breaks it straight away”.

Mr Kyle argues that the NI protocol has “put a division right down a schism right down Northern Ireland at a time when politics is already fragile”.

“The Good Friday Agreement is under huge pressure at the moment”, he adds.

“I am afraid this is a government who has played fast and loose with the Good Friday Agreement and all of the measures which have delivered peace, stability and economic growth in Northern Ireland and that is a real worry”.
