First black US secretary of state Colin Powell dies from Covid-19

Colin Powell, the first black US secretary of state, has died following complications from Covid-19.

Powell served as US secretary of state from 2001 to 2005 under George W. Bush. The former soldier’s time in office was defined by his role in garnering international support for America’s War on Terror.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said:

“I am sorry to hear of the death of Colin Powell. He was an impressive and internationally respected statesman. He leaves a lasting legacy and I’m sure his life will continue to be an inspiration to many.”

Former prime minister David Cameron also paid tribute to Powell, tweeting: “Very sad news as a brave, wise and kind man has passed.”
