Corbyn blasts alleged plans to return to electoral college for leadership elections

There is speculation that there will be proposals to return to an electoral college system at the Labour party conference later this week.

This would give the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) one third of the votes in leadership elections, and would reverse the one-person-one-vote system the party has used for leadership elections since 2015.

Former party leader Jeremy Corbyn has hit out at the proposals via Twitter stating: “It’s time to stop attacking Labour members’ democratic rights – and take the fight to the Tories”.

Former shadow chancellor John McDonnell, also commented on the rumours this morning, and urged members to ask MPs to “make it clear they reject this proposal & reassert the right of members to elect leader.”

Sharon Graham, general secretary of Unite, the second largest trade union in the UK has also released a statement criticising the plans.
