Public sector strikes

Up to 750,000 public sector workers are on strike today in the first major industrial action against spending cuts.

Four of the nation's biggest unions, the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) and the University and College Union (UCU), are leading the strike action.

An estimated 6,000 schools have closed, court cases are being postponed across the country, benefits are being left unpaid, and airports face huge backlogs with 14,000 UK Border Agency staff walking out.

A rally is taking place outside parliament and there will also be similar demonstrations in other major cities across the country.
