The government remains committed to making higher earning families pay more

The deputy prime minister today confirmed that the government plans to rethink its child benefit reform.

The reforms are controversial as they are said to disproportionately affect families in which only one parent earns.

Labour has called an Opposition day debate on the matter, and is expected to be joined by Tory backbenchers who also oppose the plans.

Both have criticised what they see as the unfairness of the bill, wherein one parent earning £42,000 a year would lose their benefits but two parents earning £80,000 would not.
