A single currency that was designed to better integrate Europe will instead be its death-knell, a leading right-wing historian has claimed.
Niall Ferguson, a professor at Harvard and the LSE, said that in light of the current eurozone crisis, the euro was causing the "disintegration of Europe".
Speaking to CNN, Professor Ferguson said the dramatic consequences of the crisis would lead to a firm backlash against the entire EU project.
"My hypothesis is that the euro will survive, because it's so expensive to get rid of it," he said.
"But the EU will be a casualty... We may find ourselves in a weird situation where the euro survives, but the EU, the bigger entity, begins to fall apart."
