With Prince William and Kate Middleton getting married, republicans are becoming more vocal about their opposition to the monarchy.

Although political leaders and commentators were quick to express their congratulations for the engagement, republicans were preparing themselves for months of media coverage before the event.

Most surveys find that a majority of Brits support the monarchy, although there is persistent criticism of the amount spent by the royal family.

The couple are expected to marry in spring or summer next year.
