Hopes are rising that Britain’s economic recovery may take place sooner than many analysts expected.

The IMF is expected to confirm Budget forecasts – widely derided as over-optimistic – of 0.2 per cent growth in 2010. Last month, chancellor Alistair Darling said the recession was now coming to an end.

Meanwhile, London is hosting finance ministers from the G20 countries over the weekend as a precursor to the official meeting in Pittsburgh in three weeks time.

The prime minister’s recent statements indicate he intends to make Tory opposition to his financial crisis response a centre-piece of the election campaign.
