The government has tried to turn the tide of the expenses scandal by creating a new independent body to scrutinise MPs’ claims.

The Parliamentary Standards Authority will also have the power to fine – or even expel – MPs.

Meanwhile the anger over the scandal has led to Speaker Michael Martin being replaced by Tory John Bercow.

The replacement was hailed by some as the triumph of the outsider, but many on the Tory benches resent his rise to the chair.
