Medical Defence Union (MDU)

The MDU is a not-for-profit, mutual organisation wholly dedicated to our members’ interests. Our team is led and staffed by doctors with real-life experience of the pressures and challenges faced in practice.

Since 1885, we have been indemnifying doctors for incidents arising from their clinical care of patients. We are proud of our heritage, but we are always looking forward, shaping our products and services to meet the changing needs of the medical profession.

We offer our members expert guidance, personal support and robust defence in addressing medico-legal issues, complaints and claims. Our customised services range from legal assistance to indemnity to appropriate CPD.

We work on behalf of our members to influence the medico-legal climate and make a positive change to the key areas that affect the profession and practice.

From campaigning for fairer compensation to consulting on more efficient regulatory processes, we are active in defending our members’ needs.
