Government appeals Binyam Mohamed ruling
Monday, 19, Oct 2009 12:00
The government will appeal against a high court decision to make public US intelligence files relating to former terror suspect Binyam Mohamed, it was announced on Friday.
Mohamed, 31, spent four years in Guantanamo Bay and claims that British authorities colluded in his torture while he was in Morocco.
The UK government, which prevented judges publishing the claims on grounds of national security, denies any collusion.
The information in question is a summary document of abuse allegations that intelligence officers in London and Washington were sharing.
Campaigners believe that the seven redacted paragraphs could prove Mohamed's case but the Foreign Office argued publishing classified material would irrevocably damage intelligence sharing between US and UK agencies.
Publication of the material will not take place until an appeal has been launched.
