Tories: Bank charges move is blow for consumers

Tuesday, 22, Dec 2009 12:20

The Conservatives' shadow Treasury minister Mark Hoban comments on the Office of Fair Trading's decision to abandon its investigation into bank overdraft charges:

"This is a huge blow for consumers. Given the uncertainty about the fairness of charges for unauthorised overdrafts, we urge the OFT to use other avenues to ensure a fair deal for consumers.

"The uncertainty created by this issue also demonstrates the need for a new consumer champion and we believe our plans for a Consumer Protection Agency meet this need. In addition, we have already called for a competition review of the banking sector and this should include bank charges."
