The Beijing Olympics have begun with a lavish opening ceremony.

Controversy still dogs the games, with many saying the Chinese government should not have been granted such a prestigious event given their human rights record.

Last Wednesday, two British activists were arrested for unfurling a banner calling for Tibetan independence.

Gordon Brown is not attending the opening ceremony although he will be there for the close of the Games. Minister for the Olympics Tessa Jowell is standing in for him.
