Hosie, Stewart

Stewart Hosie was first elected as the SNP MP for Dundee East in 2005, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 13,375.

The Dundee East constituency is found on the west coast of Scotland. It contains the middle class areas of Barnhill and Broughty Ferry, the town of Carnoustie know for its Golf Course, and the more deprived areas of Douglas and Whitefield within Dundee itself.

This area of Scotland had the highest ‘Yes’ vote in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, and had trended towards the SNP long before the party’s 2015 landslide.  Having been a Labour – SNP marginal for a number of years, this seat was held by the SNP between 1974 and 1987, and consistently for the SNP since 2005.

Hosie served as the Deputy Leader of the Scottish National Party between 2014 and 2016.  He also acted as the SNP Shadow Chancellor between 2015 and 2017.

One of the SNP’s longest serving MPs, he has also previously served as the Party’s Chief Whip and Home Affairs Spokesperson at Westminster. Stewart was the SNP’s first Youth Convener and spent four years as the Party’s National Secretary.

Born in Dundee in 1963 Stewart has a PhD in Computer Studies.  He worked in IT for over 20 years and ran his own business.  He supports Dundee United FC.

Stewart Hosie is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Motorcycling.
