Ghani, Nusrat

Nus Ghani was first elected as the Conservative MP for Wealden in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 25,655.

The constituency of Wealden in East Sussex, covers the small towns of Crowborough in the north, Hailsham and Uckfield further south, alongside a large number of affluent villages such as Hartfield, Mayfield, and Wadhurst. Containing the Ashdown Forest area that was once the home to Winnie the Pooh, alongside a large rural belt spreading down to the South Downs, this is an affluent and economically active area.  For many years it has consistently been one of the Conservative Party’s safest seats in the country.

She had previously served as Under Secretary of State for Transport between 2018 and 2020, and before that, worked in the government whips office.

Ghani was selected as the Conservative candidate for Wealden in an open primary by the public.

Born in Birmingham in 1972, Nus Ghani studied at Birmingham City University, before completing a Masters in International Relations, at University of Leeds. She then worked at an investment bank, before working for Age UK and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.  Ghani later also worked in communications for the BBC World Service and led campaigns on education and health in conflict zones.

Ghani supported Jeremy Hunt in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.  She also served as a senior fellow at the think tank, Policy Exchange.

Ghani has been particularly outspoken against the treatment of Uyghurs by the Chinese authorities, and in early 2021, was banned by the Chinese government from entering China.

Nusrat Ghani, is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Southern Rail. She is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Marine Energy; Muslim Women; Polo; Uyghurs; and Wine.
