Black, Mhairi

Mhairi Black was first elected as the SNP MP for Paisley & Renfrewshire South in 2015 being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 10,679.

Found to the south of Glasgow, this constituency contains the southern half of Paisley, the town of Johnstone, and a number of villages such as Kibarchan, Howwood, and Lochwinnoch.  The seat was formerly represented by the Shadow Labour Foreign Secretary and former cabinet minister, Douglas Alexander, but was gained by the SNP in 2015 with a 27% swing.  A third of the population live in social rented accommodation and this remains a relatively deprived part of the UK, with unemployment well above the national average.

Mhairi Black is the deputy leader of the SNP group at Westminster.  However in July 2023, she announced that she is to step down from Westminster at the next election.

The SNP’s goal is, and always will be, purely independence, says Mhairi Black

Mhairi Black was born in 1994, and was the ‘Baby of the House’, the youngest member of the House of Commons between 2015 and 2019.  Indeed in 2015, she was the youngest MP elected since the Reform Act of 1832.

When first elected, she was in her final year as a student of Politics and Public Policy at the University of Glasgow, and her final dissertation was due at the end of the same month.

As a lesbian, Mhaira Black was strongly in favour of marriage equality.

In May 2022, Mhairi Black apologised after she was filmed drinking a can of lager on a ScotRail train despite a ban on alcohol being in place.

Mhairi Black is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Equitable Life Policyholders; and Unconscious Bias.
