Vickers, Martin

Martin Vickers was first elected as the Conservative MP for Cleethorpes in 2010 with a majority of 21,418.

The constituency of Cleethorpes is a thin seat which follows the Humber coast, with the exception of the town of Grimsby which this constituency entirely encircles.   The seat contains the famous seaside resort of Cleethorpes, in which around half of the electorate live.   It then also includes the container port of Immingham, and the town of Barton upon Humber at the southern end of the Humber Bridge.  A high seven out of ten voters backed Brexit here in the 2016 EU referendum.

Cleethorpes has traditionally been a marginal constituency which was held by the Labour Party between 1997 and 2010.   However in recent years this area has swung notably to the Conservatives.  In 2019 the Conservative Party polled 69% of the vote here, well over double the level they managed back in 1997.  With the Party now boasting a majority of over twenty one thousand, this area currently resembles something of a pretty safe Conservative seat.

Martin Vickers was born in Cleethorpes in 1950.  He was educated at Havelock School and Grimsby College. He worked in the printing industry and the retail trade before taking up the position of Constituency Agent to Edward Leigh MP in 1994.

Vickers has 25 years experience as a Councillor, having sat on Great Grimsby Borough Council between 1980 and 1994, and on Northern East Lincolnshire Borough Council between 1999 and 2011.

Vickers is considered to be on the right of the Conservative Party.  He has opposed inclusive LGBT education in schools, and supported Leave in the 2016 EU referendum, having himself been a long standing campaigner on the need for an EU referendum.

He backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.

Vickers is a Christian.  He is a member of the Conservative Christian Fellowship, and has previously been a local churchwarden.

Martin Vickers is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Kosovo; Montenegro; North Macedonia; Freeports; and Rail. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on the Isle of Man; Kazakhstan; Norfolk Island; Poland; Serbia; Taiwan; Uzbekistan; British Bioethanol; the East Coast Mainline; Fisheries; Football; Mayflower 400; the Midlands Engine; Pro Life; Rail in the North; and Religion in the Media.

He is married with a daughter, and employs his wife as a part-time Junior Secretary.
