James Gray was re-elected MP for North Wiltshire in May 2010 with a majority of 7,483 votes.
James Gray, MP for North Wiltshire, has shown his support for local people with multiple sclerosis (MS) by attending a reception to celebrate a partnership between British Energy and the MS Society. The reception was held on the Terrace of the House of Commons on 18 November when Secretary of State for Health, Alan Johnson MP, formally announced the fundraising partnership in the presence of other politicians and representatives from the two organisations.
This is the fourth year that British Energy has joined up with a national charity; last year the power company raised more than £500,000 for Help the Hospices. James Gray MP attended the reception and was welcomed by swimmer Stephanie Millward, from Chippenham, who has multiple sclerosis and who competed as part of the Paralympic swimming team at this year's games.
Chair of the MS Society, Tony Kennan, said on the charity partnership: "This is really positive news for the MS Society and we are particularly pleased that James Gray MP could join us to celebrate. As a charity providing first class support for people with multiple sclerosis we rely on the goodwill and commitment of generous supporters like British Energy. Their donations will make a difference to the lives of people affected by multiple sclerosis in North Wiltshire and further afield."
British Energy operates nine UK power stations and staff at each site will work with their local branch or branches of the MS Society to make a difference to local people in their area. Bill Coley, British Energy Chief Executive, said: "In the time I've been at British Energy, I've been impressed with our staff and their professionalism. But I've also been impressed with how they are engaged in a host of activities outside of the company to make the communities in which they live and work better for all. This is a superb opportunity for us to pull together as a team and serve others through our partnership with the MS Society. As ever, I know the British Energy team will deliver outstanding results."
Guest speaker at the reception, Secretary of State for Health, the Right Honourable Alan Johnson MP, said: "I am delighted that British Energy employees have chosen The MS Society as their Charity of The Year. The MS Society makes as huge contribution to the lives of so many people around the UK, and the involvement of those in British Energy will be a considerable boost to the Society's excellent efforts. I wish the partnership every success, and I am sure it will be of great benefit to all those affected by MS who are seeking support to live their life's to the full."
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease which attacks myelin around the body's nerve fibres causing delay and confusion in messages from the brain. The MS Society works to support people affected by the condition to ensure they live life to their full potential with the care, support and information they need. James Gray is Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for MS.
