Gerald Jones was first elected as the Labour MP for Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 10,606.
He currently serves as a shadow minister for Scotland, a post he holds alongside a position in the oppositions whips’ office.
Merthyr Tydfil & Rhymney is a former industrial and former coal mining area in Glamorgan, South Wales.  This seat includes the village of Aberfan, where 144 lost their lives in the 1966 disaster in which a colliery spoil tip collapsed. This area has long been a Labour stronghold, backing the Party continuously since 1922.
Jones previously served as a Shadow Welsh Affairs spokesperson from 2020 to 2023.
Under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party, he served as the shadow minister for veterans from 2017 to 2020.
Born in 1970, Gerald Jones worked in community development for the Gwent Association of Voluntary Associations. He was elected as a Councillor in Caerphilly in 1995 and previously served as Deputy Leader of the Council. Jones is an openly gay MP.
According to the Register of Members Interests, Jones employs his partner, Tyrone, as a Senior Parliamentary Assistant.
He supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn.
At Westminster he is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Park run, Gambling Harm, Online and Home Electrical Safety, and Wales in the World.
