Eustice, George

George Eustice was first elected as the Conservative MP for Camborne and Redruth in 2010. being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 8,700.

The constituency of Camborne and Redruth is found in the south east of Cornwall, and covers the two more Labour leaning towns of Redruth and Cambourne and a number of rural villages further to the south of the constituency.  This seat contains a number of former copper and tin mining communities.  In the 1990s, this area was once represented in Parliament by the Olympic athlete and 2012 Olympic games supremo, Seb Coe.  It was then gained by the Liberal Democrats between 1997 and 2010.  In the last few elections though, this has become a fiercely fought marginal seat between Labour and the Conservatives.  It is one that Labour would be looking to win if they were to form a future government.

George Eustice served as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs under Boris Johnson between 2020 and 2022.  Eustice was a high profile backer of Rishi Sunak in the 2022 Conservative Party leadership eleciton, and was promptly dismissed from the cabinet by Liz Truss on the day that she became prime minister.   He had previously clashed with Liz Truss and questioned her commitment to seeing animal welfare recognised during in trade agreements.

Eustice previously resigned form the government in protest at the government’s then Brexit policy in February 2019.  He was then an Under Secretary of State and Minister of State at the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (2013-2019).   He returned to this post after Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in 2019.

George Eustice was born in Cornwall in 1971.  He attended Truro Cathedral School and Truro School, alongside Cornwall College.

Eustice is a former farmer who worked in the family business, Trevaskis Fruit Farm near Connor Downs, after leaving school.

Eustice then moved into politics 1999.  He worked for 9 years as the Campaign Director for the anti-European single currency group ‘No’ (formerly Business for Sterling) between 1999 and 2003.  During this role he employed Dominic Cummings, the later prominent advisor to Boris Johnson.

A one time UKIP candidate in the 1999 European Parliament elections, Eustice then worked as head of press for the Conservatives between 2003 and 2005, and then as Press Secretary to David Cameron between 2005 and 2007.

Eustice backed Michael Gove in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.  He was once a member of Cornwall Athletic Club based at Carn Brea.
