Home Office: Reforming the immigration system
Wednesday, 20 Feb 2008 00:00
Home secretary Jacqui Smith has released a green paper on reforming the immigration system which she hopes will make citizenship laws "fit for the 21st century".
The paper outlines the government's plans to simplify existing legislation and overhaul the current legal framework.
"I believe that the right response to immigration is one which reflects our values, not our fears," Ms Smith said.
"Our proposals for the future of the immigration system set out an approach which ensures that we manage and control immigration in a way that is to the benefit - not just for our economy, but for our society, our citizens, and our way of life."
The consultation ends on May 14th 2008.
