Home Office: ID cards for foreign nationals
Monday, 25 Feb 2008 00:00
Last year's Borders Act gave the government the power to force foreign nationals working in Britain to carry an identity card.
The legislation requires a code of practice to be published which outlines the way the Home Office will go about ensuring compliance with the rules.
It has now released a draft version of the code which it is now consulting on and hopes the introduction of the cards – which include the recording of a person's fingerprints – will help strengthen border security.
Borders and immigration minister Liam Byrne said: "Using advances in identity technology we can cut illegal working, protect legal migrants, and flush out those trying to evade our rules and laws."
The consultation ends on May 4th 2008.
