Matheson, Christian

Christian Matheson was first elected as the Labour MP for City of Chester in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 6,164.

He resigned as an MP in October 2022.

The constituency of the City of Chester is found on the far western side of Cheshire bordering North Wales, and is predominately focussed around the City of Chester itself.  Once a Conservative seat, this area bucked the national trend and was gained in 2015 by Labour.    Containing a large student population, some 57% of voters supported remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum.  The seat was once represented in Parliament for the Conservatives by the television personality, Gyles Brandreth.

Chris Matheson served as shadow Minister for Media between 2020 and 2021.

Born in 1968, Matheson grew up in rural Cheshire and now lives in Hoole with his family. He has a degree from the London School of Economics and prior to his election he worked as a manager in the electricity industry.  He is married with two children.

Matheson supported Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election, having backed Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn.

Matheson was a strong supporter of a Second Vote (People’s Vote) after the 2016 Brexit referendum, which he has previously described as a ‘right wing coup’.

Christian Matheson is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Aerospace, and Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Fair Business Banking, Global Education, the Football Club Group, International Freedom of Religion or Belief, Media Freedom, Bahrain, Belize, Brazil, Falkland Islands, Mexico, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the Republic of Korea, Polar Regions, Venezuela, Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan, Gibraltar, St George’s Day, Park run, Polo, the Armed Forces, the BBC, and Music.

He supports Everton football club.
