Biography

Caroline Flint was re-elected MP for Don Valley in May 2010 with a majority of 3,595 votes.

After the 2010 general election she became shadow communities and local government secretary.

On 3 October 2008, the Prime Minister appointed Caroline Flint as the Minister for Europe at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. She resigned from the post in 2009.

From January - October 2008, Caroline Flint was appointed to the post of Minister for Housing.

As Housing Minister, Caroline's achievements included: a £1billion housing package, new shared ownership and shared equity schemes to help first time buyers and a mortgage rescue scheme. She also shortlisted 15 locations for future eco-towns - the future of low carbon living in Britain.

Between June 2007 and January 2008 Caroline was Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform. Her ministerial responsibilities included the labour market, welfare to work and child poverty. Caroline was also Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber between June 2007 and January 2008.

Previously, as Minister for Public Health (May 2005-June 2007), Caroline was responsible for taking the Health Act 2006 through Parliament. This Act made England smokefree from 1 July 2007, ending smoking in enclosed public places.

In May 2005, Caroline became Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health; becoming Minister of State in May 2006.

From June 2003 - May 2005, Caroline was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Home office responsible for reducing organised and international crime; anti-drugs co-ordination and international and European issues. At the Home Office, Caroline took the following legislation through the Commons:

The Antisocial Behaviour Act (2003)

The Serious Organised Crime & Police Act (2005)

The Drugs Act (2005) Caroline also oversaw the regional launches of the Government's Drug Intervention Programme, including Doncaster, which moves addicts committing crimes into treatment.

Previously she was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Dr John Reid, in his capacity as Leader of the House and Minister without Portfolio/Labour Party Chair (2002-3). Before that appointment, Caroline was Parliamentary Private Secretary from (1999-2002) to Rt Hon Peter Hain in his capacity as Minister of State at the DTI and FCO respectively. Between 1997 and 1999, Caroline served on the House of Commons Education & Employment Committee.

Her particular policy interests are family policy, crime and anti-social behaviour, foreign affairs, education and welfare to work.
