Andrew Burnham

Biography

Andy Burnham was re-elected MP for Leigh on May 7th 2015 with 24312 votes, taking 53.9% of the vote.

Andy was appointed Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport in January 2008 having been Chief Secretary to the Treasury since the summer of 2007. He then became secretary of state for health in the final year of Gordon Brown's government. After standing in the Labour leadership election of 2010 he was appointed shadow education secretary by Ed Miliband.

Andy was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the former Home Secretary, David Blunkett between 2003 and 2004. He was also a member of the Health Select Committee from 2001 to 2003. From 2010 to 2011 he was Shadow Secretary of State for Education, and from 2011 to 2015 Shadow Secretary of State for Health.

Andy was elected as a Member of Parliament for Leigh in June 2001. Earlier in his career, he worked as a researcher for Tessa Jowell MP and at the NHS Confederation.
