Andrew Murray Burnham

Biography

Andy Burnham was re-elected MP for Leigh in May 2010 with a majority of 15,011 votes.

Andy was appointed Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport in January 2008 having been Chief Secretary to the Treasury since the summer of 2007. He then became secretary of state for health in the final year of Gordon Brown's government. After standing in the Labour leadership election of 2010 he was appointed shadow education secretary by Ed Miliband.

Andy was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the former Home Secretary, David Blunkett between 2003 and 2004. He was also a member of the Health Select Committee from 2001 to 2003.

Andy was elected as a Member of Parliament for Leigh in June 2001. Earlier in his career, he worked as a researcher for Tessa Jowell MP and at the NHS Confederation.
