Parliamentary Commission on banking standards sub-committee will continue its business  this week, as it leaps straight into the good stuff on Monday morning with a panel on miss-selling and cross-selling. The committee was set up to deal with the Libor scandal which is already slipping into the grey sludge of yesterday’s newspapers as we speak.

However, there’s still enough lingering prurient interest in the squalid moral world of banking scandals to distract public attention away from the welfare uprating bill as it goes through the chamber once more, coinciding with a select committee hearing on personal independence payments (PIP), as well. Labour MPs remain trapped between a rock and an increasingly stony hard place over the landmine of benefits, with many of their core voters not only split, but also viewing it as a key issue. However, the Conservatives need to tread carefully; recent polling has shown that welfare cuts are not necessarily the instant vote winner that top sheet polling might suggest to a casual observer.

Look out for the second reading of the Green MP Caroline Lucas’ land value tax bill, a policy once advocated by business secretary Vince Cable, in 2010.  Whatever the bill’s ultimate chance of success, the debate could be a refreshing springboard for a much-needed debate about modernising  the tax system.
