Continuing to meet the drivers of sustainability under the Code for Sustainable Homes and the Government’s zero carbon homes target NHBC has responded with a newly developed set of NHBC’s Technical Standards incorporating guidance on green roofs.

NHBC’s Standards are the key reference text for builders and developers. Following success in Europe, particularly in Germany and Scandinavian countries, builders and developers in the UK are increasingly opting for green roofs. These can bring attractive plant life into urban areas, improve biodiversity, help reduce the risk of flooding by attenuating rainfall and even help improve thermal efficiency in homes.

The new Standards, which are effective from 1 September, give detailed guidance on the different types of flat roofs and where they are most appropriate for use. Chapter 7.1 “Flat roofs and balconies” also explains the two types of green roofs currently in use and details the need to choose a “system” where the manufacturer is responsible for the complete design and installation.

Peter Crane, NHBC’s Head of Standards, said: “NHBC is supporting the rapidly emerging environmental and sustainability agendas with this new guidance. As increasing numbers of builders and developers opt for green roofs in the drive to fulfil environmental objectives it is vital that they have the necessary guidance to ensure that roofs are designed and constructed to last for the benefit of consumers.”

Notes to Editors: NHBC is the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK. It was established more than 70 years ago as a non-profit distributing company. NHBC's primary purpose is to help raise standards in the new house-building industry and provide consumer protection for new house buyers.

NHBC's ten-year 'Buildmark' warranty covers more than 80% of homes built in the UK and has protected more than 6 million homes to date.

NHBC helps raise standards by:

• registering builders who agree to comply with NHBC's Rules and Standards

• setting and maintaining construction standards for new homes

• inspecting at key stages of construction

• providing 'Buildmark,' the most comprehensive warranty and insurance cover for homes in the UK

• offering building control services in England and Wales

• providing a range of services, including technical information, training, health and safety, engineering, energy rating services and home information pack provision for new homes and housing-related sectors
