John McCain is campaigning to become President of the United States at the age of 71 but, not to be outdone, John Flunder, who is a very young 78, has decided to stand as the Senior Candidate for Mayor of London.

John is really a very young 78, extremely active, and "Proud to be a Senior". He was born in Newham and has lived in London all his life, for the last 51 years with his wife, Doreen. He is a longstanding member of the Bexley Pensioners Forum and edits their regular newsletter. Most recently he has organised the campaign against the "Londoners Only" Olympic tax, which will increase the already much too high Council Tax for Londoners throughout the next 10-12 years, and make Londoners responsible for a share of any losses. He believes that this is most unfair. The Olympic Games is for the whole of the UK and should be paid for by the Government, ie by all taxpayers, as it was in 1948.

JOHN'S 10-POINT MINI-MANIFESTO FOR LONDON IS TO:

1 Scrap the unfair and discriminatory Olympic Tax on Londoners.

2 Scrap the extension of the Congestion Charge to the West (and review the whole scheme, particularly its hours of operation and ridiculously high administrative costs.)

3 Cut the millions of pounds wasted by the current Mayor on his personal projects and providing a gravy train for "Ken's Kronies".

4 Cut the current Mayor's 153% rise in the unfair Council Tax and campaign for its abolition and replacement with a system based on everyone's ability to pay such as a Local Income Tax.

5 Provide more police on the streets and reverse the current situation where they spend only 25% of their time on patrol and 75% on administration.

6 Halt the Post Office closures in London and enable them to become one-stop shopping and community services

7 Halt the closure of Day Centres for the Elderly to combat the social exclusion of Seniors.

8 Restore the cuts in Dial-a-Ride services to combat the social exclusion of Seniors who have no transport of their own.

9 Restore the cuts in Meals on Wheels and provide more Home Care to prevent Seniors having to go into residential accommodation against their will.

10 Improve disabled access particularly on the Underground and provide more free parking facilities for the disabled throughout London.

NOTES FOR EDITORS
