The Senior Citizens Party, representing 20.6 million people over 50, are giving a cautious welcome to Lord Justice Sedley's suggestion that a National DNA Database would be much fairer than the present system. DNA testing has revolutionised the fight against crime and already helps the police to solve 20,000 crimes a year, but whereas DNA samples can often be obtained from most crime scenes this is of no use if the criminal's DNA is not in the database.

Almost every other day we read or hear in the media of violent crimes, muggings, stabbings and the use of guns which can lead to the murder of completely innocent victims. And we now have terrorism to fight against as well. Most people are convinced that we live in a much more violent and dangerous society than we did in the past, despite attempts by Government to deny it. According to the Office for National Statistics only 23 per cent of recorded crimes are actually solved, which means that criminals are committing 77 per cent of crimes and getting off scot-free!

"This is obviously an unacceptable situation," said Grahame Leon-Smith, Party Leader of the Senior Citizens Party (www.seniorcitizensparty.org.uk). "We all want to live in a crime-free society. People were very worried when CCTV was introduced into public areas, but it has definitely helped to reduce crime, and now most people welcome it and confirm that it makes them feel safer. The same could happen if DNA became the norm and as a result the percentage of crimes solved moved up to say 80 per cent or even 90 per cent. We agree that there should be a full debate and we recommend that the Government should start now by encouraging everyone to give their DNA voluntarily in order to help the fight against crime and terrorism. I would be happy to give mine, would you ? If you are not a criminal - and not intending to become one ! - why not ? You would not only be helping to reduce crime overall but reducing your chances of becoming a victim of crime."
