BASC - New council members elected

New members elected to BASC council.

13th June 2005

Three new members have been elected to BASC's governing council following the Association's Annual General Meeting on Saturday June 11th.

Eric Begbie, founder of the online Wildfowling Forum and whose interests include wildfowling, game shooting and gundog training, Lee Freestone, Chairman of the Chichester Wildfowlers, and Michael Alldis, owner and manager of the Essex shooting school were elected. Peter Pursglove, whose main shooting interest is deer stalking was re-elected.

John Graham was re-elected unopposed as Chairman. The vote for Vice-Chairman was tied between council members Robert Irvine and Simon Breasley. A postal ballot of all council members, including those not present at the A.G.M., will now take place.

BASC President Lord Lichfield was presented with a new rifle, a Ruger .17 HMR with the thanks of the Association for his work over the last four years. It was announced that Lord Home the current Chairman of Coutts Bank, will take over as BASC President from 2006. Former BASC Chairman Alan Jarret and David Penn, formerly of the Imperial War Museum, a prominent member of the Historical Breech Loading Small Arms Association, and former chairman of the Home Office Firearms Consultative Committee were elected as honorary Vice Presidents.

A moment of silence was held to mark the death of John Anderton, former director of BASC who died last month.

The Stanley Duncan Conservation trophy was presented to the High Legh Estate in Cheshire and accepted by shoot manager Stuart Abbey. The Ian Richardson Trophy, awarded by staff to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the work of BASC was presented to Mike Tipping for his contribution to Young Shots and Gamekeeping events and fundraising. The Tim Sedgwick Trophy, awarded by council for outstanding contributions to the welfare of BASC was won by John Coldman and Michael Rees for their contributions to the funding of an ongoing joint study into the economic and environmental contribution of shooting to the U.K.

Special presentations were made to Chris Catlin, former contributor to Sporting Gun for his work in shooting journalism, Andrew Hoon former chairman of the Deer Initiative for his contribution to deer management, Roy Kitcher and Tony Phillips for their work and long service with the South Hants. wildfowlers, former firearms licensing manager Mike Lobb, Kevin O'Callaghan of the Forensic Science Service for his work with the British Shooting Sports Council and artist Julian Novorol for his support of the Wildlife Habitats Trust. Honorary Life memberships for lifetime contributions to shooting were awarded to former gamekeeper and BASC Council member Derek Vaines and Mac Narborough, President of the Fenland Wildfowlers' Association.
