Unlock Democracy welcomes Lib Dem Freedom Bill

Friday, 27 February 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting on the launch by Chris Huhne yesterday of the Liberal Democrat's proposed Freedom Bill, Director of Unlock Democracy Peter Facey said:

"We warmly welcome the publication of this Bill, listing precisely which laws the Liberal Democrats propose to scrap and which civil liberties they would restore. This puts down a marker for the other political parties, especially the Conservatives, to spell out exactly what they would repeal and confirm whether they will support Bill in Parliament.

"The publication of this Bill comes just days before the Convention on Modern Liberty and at a time when the government seems determined to accelerate our progress towards a database state. When people such as Dame Stella Rimington start expressing concerns about where we are headed, it is time for even the most trusting of individuals to start paying more attention.

"We urge MPs from across the political spectrum to support this Bill, and their constituents to keep the pressure on them until they do."
