Unite comment on the Fair Deal pension policy consultation

Thursday, 3 March 2011 12:00 AM

Commenting on the launch of the Treasury's consultation on the Fair Deal pensions policy, Unite assistant general secretary, Gail Cartmail, said:

"Our members will see the Treasury's consultation on the 'Fair Deal' as the coalition government lining up another attack against decent pension provision for ordinary working people.

"Massive redundancies, cuts to frontline services, pay freezes and wholesale privatisation force us to question government's competence. Increasingly Westminster resembles 'Keystone Cops' style government as ill thought out measures are introduced only to be withdrawn or amended.

"The 'Fair Deal' helps protect workers from a race to the bottom. We know a work pension reduces pensioner poverty and in a civilised society there is nothing wrong with that aspiration."
