Royal College of Physicians comment on 1 in 25 deaths worldwide due to alcohol

Commenting on the study to be published in The Lancet tomorrow on 1 in
25 deaths worldwide being attributable to alcohol, Professor Ian Gilmore, President of the Royal College of Physicians and Chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK said:
"This study is a global wake-up call - the shocking evidence shows that
1 in 16 male deaths worldwide are caused by alcohol. We need an International Framework Convention for Alcohol Control, similar to that on tobacco, as soon as possible, to put into practice the evidence-based measures needed to reduce alcohol-related harm. These include increasing the price of alcohol, reducing its availability and banning advertising, and the action needs to start now."
Professor Gilmore is also the author of one of the other editorials in the series on alcohol and will be available in Liverpool tomorrow morning for interview.
