RHA: Inflation announcement makes April fuel duty rise even worse

Thursday, 20 January 2011 12:00 AM

The fuel campaign group FairFuelUK has renewed its call to the Chancellor of the Exchequer to abandon the fuel duty rise planned for April as the surge in inflation means that the duty rise will be even worse than anticipated. The Chancellor is committed to a 1p rise on top of inflation.

This week saw the announcement that inflation is rising fast. The confirmation that inflation continues to rise means that the actual fuel price at the pumps could be a massive 5p per litre or nearly 23p per gallon!

Peter Carroll of the FairFuelUK Campaign that is supported by the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association said, "Fuel prices are already at record levels. Everyone is suffering. Surely, it cannot be right to go ahead against the background of such high prices and an increasing level of inflation. Businesses and millions of motorists are being squeezed and cannot take any more of these increases without jobs being lost, prices in the shops going up and even more businesses going bust".

Geoff Dunning of the RHA said, 'We now estimated that the rise could be as much as 5p per litre because the Chancellor is committed to adding his 1p extra duty on top of the rate of inflation which is rising fast.'

Theo de Pencier of the Freight Transport Association said, 'The rise in fuel duty in April will now be much worse than we thought. The double whammy to the economy is that it will further increase inflation - which is already rising fast'.

Peter Carroll added, 'It's vital that everyone who is concerned about surging fuel prices backs us at www.fairfueluk.com The Government will only listen if we have enormous business and public support'.
