Countryside Alliance: 200 open days in National Shooting Week

Monday, 14, May 2007 12:00

The countdown to National Shooting Week has begun! In just a few days, thousands of people across the UK can try one of our most exciting Olympic sports for the first time ever during National Shooting Week from May 26th to June 3rd 2007. More than 200 public open days are being laid on by shooting schools and clubs across the country.

Members of the public are being encouraged to try one of the most exciting participation sports in a safe and friendly environment. Shooting is one of the most inclusive Olympic and Paralympic sports, where gender, age and disability are no barriers to success. National Shooting Week is a Government-backed initiative organised by the British Shooting Sports Council (BSSC), the umbrella body for shooting sports.

The week is aimed at those who have never experienced target shooting before. Complete beginners who would like a shot at becoming the next shooting star can find out where their nearest event is during the Week by going to: www.nationalshootingweek.co.uk

National Shooting Week organiser, Robert Gray, said: “At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, shooting accounted for 23 out of the UK’s 116 medals, so the sport will have a huge role to play in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. National Shooting Week is all about people experiencing a popular sport that Britain is actually good at, so give it a shot!”

Notes to Editors

The aims of National Shooting Week include: to provide opportunities to try a variety of target shooting disciplines on a nationwide scale; to enable anyone to try shooting for the first time; to promote respect for and understanding of legal firearms and airguns.

Its member organisations are: Association of Professional Clay Target Grounds, Association of Professional Shooting Instructors, British Association for Shooting and Conservation, Clay Pigeon Shooting Association, Countryside Alliance, Gun Trade Association, Institute of Clay Shooting Instructors, Muzzle Loaders Association, National Rifle Association, National Smallbore Rifle Association, Sportsman’s Association, Shooting Sports Trust.
