V challenges MPs to volunteer alongside 16-25s this summer

Tuesday, 17 Jun 2008 15:33
The door has been opened for MPs across the country to see for themselves how young volunteers in their constituencies are making a difference to their communities. They’re being invited them to volunteer alongside young people their area in the v challenge.

The v challenge will showcase the success of vinvolved, England’s biggest ever youth action programme, which offers thousands of innovative volunteering opportunities to those aged 16-25.

The v challenge encourages MPs to take part in volunteering opportunities that tap into their interests and passions and benefit their local communities. MPs can offer help coaching kid’s football, staging music and arts workshops, or urban tree planting, for example.

Terry Ryall, v’s Chief Executive, stated that recent research shows that young people feel they are often reviewed negatively by both the public and the press. “Young people often get a bad press and in a recent survey conducted by v, 70% said that they feel negatively perceived by the public, despite the fact that 44% are actively doing positive things for their community. The v challenge is an opportunity for MPs to see this positive action for themselves and to volunteer alongside young people in their local constituencies.”
